sovereignty

I-Collective is founded on the four core principles of indigenous, inspired, innovative, and independent. The collective of Indigenous chefs, activists, herbalists, seed, and knowledge keepers, I-Collective promotes community resilience, indigenous food and celebrates traditional cooking, ingredients, harvesting, and food growing methods. Their project ‘A Gathering Basket’ is a collaborative multimedia cookbook that will highlight indigenous narratives and decolonize food systems.

Our Honest Opinion

Food is one of the most intimate ways we connect to the earth and others. For indigenous communities, this relationship has been corrupted by colonialism. I-Collective’s fight for indigenous food sovereignty is rooted in this erasure of indigenous knowledge and practices around food. We love how they want to break down barriers and amplify first nation voices to rebuild a sustainable food system for indigenous communities. Later in the year they are releasing a multimedia book following an indigenous food narrative called ‘A Gathering Basket’. This book will be filled with recipes, insight, poems, writings and teachings about indigenous food systems to help reconnect people with their roots and ancient wisdom. The multimedia aspect of the book will include a webinar series to help strengthen the relationship between people and their food. We love how I-Collective is bringing food sovereignty to the forefront of the conversation.
